What is a Focus Word?

Are you familiar with the practice of choosing a focus word or words for the year?

A Focus Word(s) will be your theme to help guide your thinking and action and is a reminder of how you want to expend your energy and attention.

Find words that are meaningful for you to help inform your intention for how you move through the year, something to encourage you to be the best version of yourself and bring clarity to what you want to create or accomplish in your life.

If choosing only one word seems overwhelming, start with three words. Your Focus Words can include words like Joy, Gratitude, Grow, Focus, Grace, Replenish, Trust, Simplify. The words to choose from are endless. There is no wrong choice.

You may be thinking that you don't even no where to start. Think about these questions:

  • Reflect on the past year. What is it that you could use more of in your life?

  • Think a year into the future. What would you like to have accomplished by the end of 2022? Is there a word that could serve as a foundation for your future accomplishments?

  • What kind of person do you want to become by the end of 2022?

  • Think about three or four people that inspire you. When you think of these people, what word describes them?

  • Create a list of words that pop up when thinking about these questions. Do the words apply to different areas of your life?

  • Narrow the list to three words. These are your focus words for the year.

Think of these words as your mantra. Write your word(s) down where you can see them every day. Set an intention with these words in mind as you start your day. Share your words with your family and friends. At the end of the day, contemplate how these words were integrated into your day.

What words did you choose?
